Hmmm...

So Tyra Banks is covering the upcoming issue of the New York Times out June 1st. And her cover image is causing a controversial uproar as it is appears to be comparing Ms. Banks to the likes of Oprah and Martha Stewart, arguably two of the most influential women in the world. The NYT is asking is Tyra next on the list. Tyra does say in her story how she describes herself as a mix of the two. Speak on it...

I came to this late, but just for the record - outside the US Martha Stewart has absolutely no influence. Now I'm not saying Tyra does, but both her shows are constantly running here in the UK. She definitely has more coverage...

LOVE TYRA!!! I agree with a

LOVE TYRA!!! I agree with a lot of things said about tyra but i don't think she is a bad person! No matter if she is fake, it is her way to make money! It is just like saying a singer that dances half naked, it is ok because that how it is?! Oprah has her own style and Tyra has definitely her own style! I think it is great that she can have a model!! We all need one and Oprah is a real good model so why not?!!! She is not perfect, she was probably not as good as naomi but she never pretends to be like naomi, she like her new body and i don't think she regrets this period! she moved on and she is one of the only models in the world that were able to have a new career! If naomi is not a model anymore, what could she do??? To be honest, i really don't know! So tyra prove that she has essential qualities to success in life even when beauty, and body is gone! (not saying that tyra is not beautiful , she is to me but she cannot be a model today!)

Tyra is a joke and she has

Tyra is a joke and she has all of you fooled. No she is not "a black woman in america doing her thing" ALL SHE DOES IS TALK ABOUT HERSELF, she is a fraud. Her top model "show" does nothing for the contestants. Those models on her show do not get anywhere. I am in the fashion business and the general word around is that the models on her show don't go very far, due to her bad casting skills. Many of them never had the look to begin with. Not to mention Tyra was not that big of a model herself, as she proclaims to be. Her tired career at Victoria's secret, is nothing compared to Naomi's career of countless major campains, contracts that is still ongoing today. This comparison to Oprah and Martha, turns my stomach. Not a hater just a realist, her tacky non-journalism skills are much to be desired. Let me not get started on her tacky lace front, the bottom live is that Tyra is a joke. People don't be so close minded that you don't recognize true talent when you see it. The new york times should be ashamed of themselves, they have truly hit a new low.....ugh!

Tyra certainly has earned the respect and admiration she has received for what she has accomplished in the modeling industry however, it bears mentioning that she is not the creator of ANTM. That honor goes to a model booker - not Tyra - no matter how many times people try to spin the facts.

ok all you Tyra lovers we get it...... that's your opinion, but because we disagree doesn't mean we are hating anymore then it means you are an ass kissing Tyra fan now does it? it's just opinion... yeah yeah yeah she is black and doing her thing... claps for her... I DO NOT LIKE HER STYLE! I don't care what O did in the past that was one hundred years ago! This is 2008 and Tyra's show hasn't evolved into much more then when she started so if they are comparing her to two women that are moguls and she is comparing herself, then she should take better notes on what to do... her show doesn't have to mimic O's but the buffonery crap is just dumb and annoying in MY opinion... When she has a strong opinion about something you see it on her face.. when O has a strong opinion she throws her remark in asks the proper question the public wants to know, over talks her guests and moves on... Tyra gets the stank face so being judgemental is not part of the program it's in the delivery in which you judge if you must judge! oh and I do like the pic, it's over the top..lol.. just like Tyraaaaaaaaaa

Am I the only one who sees how preposterous the Trya Banks show is? Like many of the other commentaters stated, Tyra Banks has shitty ass hosting skills, an inability to relate to anyone out in the real world, a habit of putting on a false front and another nasty habit of bringing every topic she ever fucking talks about back to herself or how she was attacked by the media when they called her fat. In fact, she needs to fucking get over that shit. She needs to stop talking about it if she thinks she not fat, but because she does she obviously has an insecurity about her weight causing her to feel the need to always defend her weight and shape. And also what journalistic background does Tyra have? NONE WHAT SO FUCKING EVER!!! Have you noticed all of her stories are portrayed in the same style. Tyra puts on some makeup, pretends to be homeless or fat or ugly for 5 hours, does the same thing to some random ass chick and asks the girl what she learned. Then Tyra spends another half hour talking about how she felt. All I'm saying is that Tyra Banks show is sooo superficial, its based surface emotions and material things and ideas. Remember Oprah started her industry from ground up. She work in the radio industry for many years before even getting her own show. The same is true for Martha Stewart. She too developed a number of cookbooks before getting her business started as well. However Tyra Banks was just some random ass model who was to old to continue to go on with her career, and was somehow given a talk show. Also though Tyra may have had a rough childhood she doesn't have the emotional depth like Oprah. Oprah is able to connect with her audience because of experiences from sexual molestation, to racism, and the hardships of building her own empire by herself. However Tyra has not, all she has done was to diet, walk down a catwalk, take some pictures and have everything pretty much handed to her. She was given her talk show, Oprah and Martha worked for theirs. I must admit though Tyra's show is pretty fun from time to time, but she can not be compared to Oprah. You may not remember that because that was in the early Tyra days... but it only got worse. She needs a few (maybe more than a few classes about hosting) She is horrid at that. I believe that no one in the audience is actually there to be apart of the show, there are a lot of model wanna bes looking for their big greak while sitting in the audience... and we all know it. The show is so fake, all the way down to the host (Tyra) How dare the NYT compare her to Lady O. Something that Lady O has that Trya does not have is class. would you ever see a show where Lady O would try to squash rumors such as something so dumb and juvenile such as the show that Tyra "proved" that her breasts were real? Come on now. Have some class? I mean what's next? A show about weave? Come on. There is too much going on within out generation to be belittled by this dumb show. We have enough pressures that weigh us down daily, that I think that she could be a better role model. Lastly, I don't see her as a Martha Stewart... does she even have a clothing line? Puhleeeease. Let's see, she has a fake Talk Show that she cannot host, a TV show that is fake because after the show is over she leaves those girls (including the winners) high and dry. Come on now. She needs to make some major changes because her career is a flop. She is too old to act like she is the same age as Raven Samone. And don't get me started about the BET Awards show that awarded her (for what?).... Did she really have to talk to the audience like they were children and cry those crocodile tears? Did America really need to be "Tyra-fied"? Yikes. Please put her back in some lingerie and on a runway. She needs to stick to modeling and quit speaking in front of the camera.
Well I guess you all never watched Oprah in the early years, her topics were not alway so insightful and deep, I recall an number of shows full of fluff, makeovers etc. that is what talk shows are all about. Oprah was also accused of not being relatable, especially to poor black people. Oprah also made a habit of telling her story, or relation to the subject she was speaking on. And every other show was about weight, her weight loss, weight gain, and Steadman, Steadman, Steadman, that is why she doesn't talk about him any more. Any show about relationships, she was like well me and Steadman. My point is that Oprah is an example of growth. Tyra is growing too, for her not to have any professional training, she is doing quite well. If given the opportunity we could all find shit we don't like about whoever. Fact is Tyra is 34 with a growing empire, and I believe wealthier than either woman was at her age. She puts her best foot forward and tries to make an impact and a difference, sometimes she misses the mark, but Oprah and Martha a good company and she deserves to be associated with them. The numbers speak for themselves. Besides she is far from the only talk show host who is not a journalist.

Like it or not, she is a media mogul in the making.
exactly, (ANTM is branded in 121 countries). She's made millions from modeling, definitely from ANTM, being the creator and producer, from the Tyra show, and because she is the queen of cheap, I'm sure she's investing that money in many ventures...She does all this without shakin' her ass and sleeping around to get to the top--one of the few positive Black females that we can look up to today. And so what if she can be judgmental at times, talk show hosts do that! Oprah, Montel, hell, even Jerry Springer does--they have to be, it is what makes each different because they have to interject their own voice on the issue at hand...

It's amazing how quickly

It's amazing how quickly Black women hate on each other sooo quickly...here is a phenomenal black woman who is so successful in many different arenas. As annoying as she may be (I agree with some comments that others have pointed out), she addresses issues in our community, the gay community, and other issues that I have not seen on any other talk shows. Her show is truly innovative. In any case, Oprah and Tyra may not be in the same league, but they are very successful, positive and powerful black women, and that should be enough. Tyra shouldn't be compared to those two, and Oprah shouldn't be compared to Martha Stewart because each has carved out her own niche in the business, and that's why they are not competing with each other: Tyra--young audiences; Oprah--older audiences; Martha Stewart--homemaker/housewife/arts and crafts audiences. Damn, just applaud Black women in general for making it in this crazy world. The New York Times, a respectable newspaper, did not think twice...
camilla's picture

Everyone should just leave

Everyone should just leave Tyra alone, she is a Black woman in America doing her thing and that says enough. They don't allow us to do put so much anyway, anytime I see a black woman close to calling her own shots I'm happy. Instead of putting the woman down why not lift her up and wish her much success in the near future. That's what's wrong with our people now it's so easy for us to put the next person down. She made it in the modeling industry and got out while she still had time to do other things. Tyra keep up the good work and always know that what God has for you no one can take it away. God Bless.
Ok,
Ok, so I'm a fan of Tyra's, but she will never be an Oprah or Martha, and here's why: She lacks substance. The only thing she can relate to real life is being a sickly looking pre-teen, then teenager, then becoming a super model. How many of us have had these experiences? Ummmm, close to NONE!!! She tries too hard to relate to her audience instead of being herself. And unlike Oprah and Martha, Tyra lacks the sustainable journalism and realism that the others bring to the screen. She's not married, she doesn't have any kids...they only women she can relate to are adolescents and spinsters.
Why do we talk about Tyra not being herself? Personally, I have never met Tyra so I can't tell you what "herself" is. And Martha Stewart (a former model) made her name off of showing folks how to artfully fold cloth napkins and use pumpkins as soup bowls. I think she can be compared to both Martha and Oprah in terms of being independent (none of these women are married presently) female moguls. These women are their own brands. All women have diversified their careers such that they are reaching into our homes, our consciousness. No one is saying that she has quite reached their stature yet, but time is definitely on Tyra's side.

Let's not forget that Oprah

Let's not forget that Oprah had to refine her ish and it didn't happen over night, lol. I say go for it Tyra. I'm not a particular fan of her show, but it ain't like anybody is really trying give her a run for her money(Rachel Wray is wack beyond belief, so....). If she can get it right, she might figure out just how she can be a new "voice". I mean what is this, like her 3rd season? Someone keeps renewing that contract, so she's gotta be doing something right.

Why all the hate on Tyra?

Why all the hate on Tyra? What else was she to do after being a supermodel when she has no college degree or formal training in anything else besides being in front of the camera?? Veronica Webb is doing it, so is Heidi Klum, so is Janie Dickinson, etc. Why not Tyra? Without a serious investment of time and education, most professions are closed off to her. Yes, it is true that Oprah has a journalism degree, but journalism is not like other professions, because it stays letting novices up into their ranks without training. Look at Star Jones, the women on the View, whomever. The other professions (medicine, law, accounting, etc.) require that you be licensed and trained before you can practice. Anyway, I digress. Tyra is no Oprah yet, but Oprah's been up in this game for damn near 30 years. Tyra can get there too, even if it's not tomorrow.

Tyra controversial? hmmm NOT!

Tyra controversial? hmmm NOT! Judgemental? YES!! I like Tyra better as a model, she WAS FIERCE!! I wish she had chosen another route other then tv or maybe I would appreciate her better on radio or acting in low budget movies... I wouldn't compare her to Oprah nor Martha... but I would have to agree to the comparison of Ellen or Rachael Ray in more of a fashion, buffoon anything goes type show... Why can't she just be Tyra anyway? Maybe that's the problem she's comparing herself because most viewers can tell she isn't being true to herself. She isn't funny but silly...and she talks too much too quickly and over talks the guests sometime like Rachael Ray.... I do appreciate Tyra's strong black woman hustle though she can't be denied that at all.

Like many people said Tyra is

Like many people said Tyra is for our generation. She is outrageous, judgemental and always overdoing it because that IS our generation. Oprah is more relaxed cause shes an older woman but I love them both as for Martha I dont understand where that comparison came from. MAYBE Ellen or Rachel Ray but Martha? Shes in a whole nother genre

Tyra is off to a good start

Tyra is off to a good start but she has a LOT of work to do. She is fun and sometimes her heart is the right place but she is not an effective interviewer. When she delves into more serious topics she stumbles through them - it is not a strength of hers. She needs more training. And she needs to stop talking about herself and injecting her situations onto the guest's stories. It is very ANNOYING!!!! It depends on what audience she is going after. I think her show suits the 12-25 year old demographic very well. That is not Oprah's or Martha's audience.

It is not the Wall Street

It is not the Wall Street Journal...let's read
Chakkan's picture

First of all, I am disgusted

First of all, I am disgusted that the Wall Street Journal would even think of comparing Tyra Banks the model turned pathetic talk show host to the magnificent Oprah. Though the topics her topics have potential to convey important messages to her general audience, her journalistic and hosting abilities do not match up to the quality of her topics. When she talks she sounds like a dumb fuck, like some preteen 12 year old whose in the mall with her little girlfriends about topics she doesn't really understand, but tries to make it seem like she does. Oh yeah by the way WHAT THE FUCK IS UP WITH TYRA ALWAYS WANTING TO GRAB HER GUESTS' BOOBS!?!?!
Tracy's picture

TYRA IS WAY TO JUDGMENTAL!!!

TYRA IS WAY TO JUDGMENTAL!!! SHE JUDGES MOST OF HER GUESTS WHICH IS REALLY ANNOYING!!!
Yo YO's picture

tyra's doing her thing, but

tyra's doing her thing, but like someone stated she needs to watch a few "O" reruns and see how its done. she must get off the "I" train and appreciate that some of "uS" like our hair just fine-sometimes her reaffirm myths. for example, on one show someone hated their hair and her reply, while pointing to her head, and I'm summarizing was "well, you could have to work with what we have to"

Oprah is an actual

Oprah is an actual journalist---she studied the field that she is in. She didn't just luck up on it because she was already famous. And not only that, Oprah is not just a TV personality. Her journalistic background is what taught her how to relate to people as well as ask the right questions in a professional and effective manner. Tyra is just nosy and goofy as hell. So, while I don't doubt her drive, I do doubt that she's serious about actually doing what Oprah does. Oprah, mainly, attained her wealth from one profession---television. Tyra, on the other hand, has too many things that she's trying to do, all at the same time. If she could just narrow down whatever she's trying to do as well as take herself more seriously, then she probably would be able to become a TV legend. But, I think that she's more interested in getting the title of being the 1st "anything" to do "something"---meaning that you could insert any profession in that title, as long as she gets to be more famous and rich off of it.

Is anyone remembering what

Is anyone remembering what oprah show was about when she first started? It wasn't the Oprah show that it is today, she grew over the years and maybe Tyra will too. I like the fact that she had plans an ambitions for her life after the modeling career, you don't have to like her personality but you have to admire her drive. Hopefully she will learn how to stop turning most of the subjects on her show back on herself.

Top Model is about to be over so that's a wrap. She may create a brand, but nothing compares to the people they listed.

This is shameful. The New

This is shameful. The New York Times is a highly respectable news source and I am surprised they would even consider comparing Tyra to Oprah and Martha. First and foremost. I hate when media sources try to create the next mega-star. Like this person is going to be the next...whomever. Micheal Jordon is who he is for a reason. There will never been another Oprah. Martha is a more business savvy Julia Child and her own person. But there was and will not be ANOTHER them. American need to stop doing this. Tyra is a talented model and a creative woman who is bringing new things to the entertainment world. Leave it at that. DO NOT compare her to Oprah or Martha. Both of those women worked from the bottom up. Tyra creates a fantasy because she needs a story. Her MOTHER was a photographer who used to photograph models who encouraged her to get Tyra into modeling. Tyra's mother taught her about light and photography. If you ask Tyra they were struggling in Crenshaw some where ( that is simply not true). I would have more respect for this article if the headline was-- Tyra: The New Entertainment Renaissance Woman or something of that nature.

Hmmmm....supermodel,

Hmmmm....supermodel, co-creator of a show that has imprints in 121 countries (Top Model), talk show host for the younger generation (which by the way always stays interesting), role model...YEAH, I think Tyra is up there... People need to stop hating...I know Tyra can be annoying at times, but Tyra is doing it BIG--just look at the facts, she is a brand, like it or not. She could easily come out with her own lingerie line, clothing line, perfume line, etc. and it would easily sell...if B list celebrities can do it, so can Tyra...let's come together for once and congratulate a sista that's doing it big and positively well!!
