Bobby Brown Speaks Out About Whitney Houston's Death On "The Today Show," Said He Didn't Do Narcotics Before Meeting Whitney

For the first time since Whitney Houston's death, we're hearing her ex-husband Bobby Brown speak out in his own words. His response to being blamed for figuratively killing Whitney and how his current fiancee feels about their past love, inside...

In part 1 of this morning's Matt Lauer interview with Bobby Brown (above), the singer spoke out in response to those who blame him for introducing his ex-wife Whitney Houston to drugs.

Bobby maintained that he didn't even do drugs before meeting Whitney (aside from weed and alcohol) and when he was introduced to it in their relationship, his addictive personality allowed for things to get out of control.

Matt asked Bobby what he could have done differently when he saw Whitney spiraling out of control, and Bobby responded:

"I coulda done something different, you know to -- ensure that she had a longer life. But ... you have to want it, you know?"

He said they were so in love and so deep into their addiction that the first season fo "Being Bobby Brown" was a wake up call. Their drug use was affecting their relationship and their daughter. And they saw just how they looked int he public eye. Whitney refused to do another season, and the couple also filed for divorce the following year in 2006.

Bobby says he had so much love for her and never would want to hurt her:

"My fiancee knows how I felt about that woman," Brown said. "My kids know how I feel ... how I felt about Whitney. It's not a secret, you know? I was in love with her deeply."

Bobby revealed he found out that Whitney died from his New Edition groupmate Ralph Tresvant while they were on stage.

Everybody wants to blame bobby for what this ADULT woman did to herself. If you watch the last interview that Whitney did with Oprah, she'll say it right there point blank that SHE chose to do drugs, weed wasnt enough for her so she laced it with coke and that Bobby always chose liquor over drugs. How did he benefit from it? Bobby has/had his own money! I love Whitney also but she was grown and you make your bed and you lay in it. She was from Jersey so she was that kind of chick already when she went into the business. Her management team tried so hard to keep her looking like this clean nothern girl but that's not who she was and she said that! Just like how they tried to keep Rhianna clean, she spiraled out of control, they all do, let them be themselves, let Bobby live too.

Bobby may not have been the one to get her on drugs but he certainly was the one that benefited from her STAYING on drugs. He still is guilty of keeping her high so she could spend money on him and all his family and all his kids and paying all his child support. Whitney gave BIG TIME to all her family including her brother and Pat and all her family. Whitney was surrounded by people who benefited by her staying addicted to cocaine. All these people are guilty of keeping her addicted so they could get what they wanted during the time she still had a lot of money. It's sooo sad that after the money was gone so was Bobby. After the man that claims he never did hard drugs until she came along. Helped her spend thousands and thousands of dollars doing drugs. Now he wants to set the record straight. How dare you! You despicable Bastard! Your hands are not clean. So you and that Big Featured Ugly Girlfriend and that Beatup looking Ugly Baby and all your Ugly Kids can have a seat somewhere! It's like someone being at a murder scene, You may not have been the one that pulled the trigger but just being at the scene causes you to be and accessory to murder. I do not believe Bobby or his

I do not believe Bobby or his claim that he never did drugs before Whitney. The truth of the matter is there were no missed concerts, drugs found at airports or erratic behavior before Bobby. He could have said all of this in the many interviews he did before her death, but chose to make all of these so-called claims when she is no longer here to defend herself. I don't blame him for her death, but I do believe he brought Whitney down, something that she even said before her death.

Whitney Houston was a grown woman entitled to make her own decisions from the day she met Bobby Brown. If you listen to interviews of people closest to her, that validates, that Whitney did what she wanted to do on her own terms. Including doing drugs, and being with Bobby Brown.

I think Whitney stared using drugs back when she broke up with Eddie Murphy. That song did'nt we almost have it all she was high then, but she had control over the drugs so she believe. Cunningham the football player , she dated said the song, was about him. and eddie said they never dated but were friends. bobby gets dogged because of the cheating and his behavior towards her during the marriage. her fans feel he abused her, everyone knows she wasn't forced to do drugs. but when she spoke to oprah about his emotional and verbal abuse, and the spitting. emotional and verbal is just as bad as physical. now bobbyis bipolar so, he couldn't help his actions, but the fact that he did this did destroy whitney, even if she forgave him, it doesn't take away the end results of his actions. i'm pretty sure, she was messed up mentally behind that. and then to have her daughter witness that, is why people dislike him. i feel his bipolar , drug use, the fact that she was the breadwinner, and the icon destroyed any chance of normalcy with them. and the fact that men made it known how desirable she was, i'm pretty sure many men with status probably made bobby feel less than, with the flirting with whitney ,and ignoring him, or insulting him to his face. even whitney acknowledged his manhood was destroyed during the marriage. i think they both were destroyed, but that's between him to work out.

Your comments are exactly what I believe was the cause of their failed relationship and ultimately Whitney's demise. In watching old video footage of them together, you could see that Bobby had a problem with her being the Star, which caused him to act out, cheat and do all of the destructive things he did to himself and her. I sincerely hope that he is clean and that he doesn't use their life together to cash in, but it appears he already has.

1st of all I am not sure why the media and everyone else wants to blame Bobby for Whitney downfall when it was clearly spoken from other celebrities that stated Whitney was doing drugs long before Bobby. Od course the longr you do something the more you lose control of the drug i have never heard of one addicted helping another addicted kick a habit. Bobby and Whitney had issues that spiral in the media but as many said there were deeper issues than Bobby. If it had been the other way around would people had blame Whitney for Bobby death? Whitney Houston has been my idol since 1992 and I discovered her at 11 years old, I am a die hard. Through the past few years I have seen how human she is and I can honestly say he is telling the truth BECAUSE people in her life have confirmed she used cocaine before him. I do believe him yet I think she was maybe a recreational user before she met him, once he discovered it it became more serious. Whitney brother has said it, and countless # of her friends have confirmed that back in the 80s and early 90s everyone was doing coke and Whitney was no exception. Whitney was in the pop world, studio 54 world. Bobby in the hip hop and R&B scene where coke wasnt prominate at all. Keep in mind he was 22 when he met her and she was 27 so I believe it. Now in the middle he became addicted to it when she was only a casual user so in turn thats when she started using more heavy (she said this one Oprah). I feel like everyone does young stuff yet alot of people have peers in their lives to help them stop the childish partying and drug use. Normally that is in form of a spouse that helps you along, Whitney didnt have anyone but Bobby. Her mom is her mom and it was but so much she could do. I dont think it was his fault that she is gone because she was a grown woman and 8 yrs his senior YET I do feel like their relationship contributed to her death. It was toxic.

Hold up. He was 22 with THREE children. According to Whitney they dated 3 years before they married in 1992. His daughter LaPrincia Brown was born in 1990. Brown returned to a relationship with Kim Ward and their reunion produced another child, Robert Barisford, Jr. Brown proposed marriage to Houston, who accepted despite the fact that Bobby was having another woman's child. It's rumored he did not tell her until months after she the engagement. Let's not pull the age card. Bobby was far from this innocent lamb. Brown and Houston would marry on July 28, 1992. Nine months afterwards, on March 4, 1993, Bobbi Kris was born. Do the Math. Bobby was far from and innceint 22 year old.

@ THEO....I read your other comment and your basic thing is that Bobby Brown did not kill Whitney...and you're right. Years of constant drug abuse killed Whitney Houston. But if you look at the totality of the relationship Bobby was very abusive to Whitney and played a BIG role in her decline and eventual demise. Both of these two are far older than I so I can't comment on what exactly happened or when. But from what I've read Bobby Brown came from a rough background (same as Whitney). I find it hard to believe that Bobby did not do any HARD drugs prior to meeting Whitney Houston. Whitney's image was clean up until she got with Bobby and by clean I mean no visible signs of crazy behavior. Bobby had tons of visible signs of active drug use prior to meeting Whitney and TOGEHTER they went down HARD. I also agree with you it was a network of enablers around Bobby and Whitney. But Bobby Brown was so deep into drugs he did not know how to protect his wife or her gifts. Bobby did not protect his own daughter. When you make poor decisions (with DRUGS) like Whitney or Michael there are so many other affected and I'm not talking about "FANS." All these people had children who now have to struggle without their parents and it's very selfish and SAD. Diana Ross is smarter because she was not into hard drugs but I do know she had issues with drinking. Bottom line no person is perfect or immune from the issues any other person may face. It's just very tragic that people with prodigious talents like Michael Jackson and Whitney did not know their own strengths or have the proper support systems. Fame is something I don't think I would ever want because it's hard enough navigating through life and then add on the fact you can't deal with your issues without the benefit of HONESTY and FRIENDSHIP because FAME brings all the WRONG people around you. It's part of the deal people make for FAME but it also can isolate people. I'm really worried for Rihanna because I think she may also lack the protection of good friends and family who really have her best interests at heart. The tragic thing about Whitney and Michael is they did not have anyone that could save them or help them because of their FAME. This to me is the most tragic part of FAME.

If any person thinks that Bobby Brown did not do hard drugs (COKE) and have issues with substance abuse BEFORE he met Whitney I have a bridge to sell you. From what I've read Bobby Brown was acting out and having issues with substance abuse LONG before he met Whitney Houston. I remember in his interview with Diane Sawyer and he was obviously on Cocaine and sweating (like a PIG) and when asked if he was on drugs he said no he was Bipolar. LMAO Then when asked if he ever HIT Whitney Houston he said NEVER. Bobby made up this lie that he came from women and he would NEVER hit a woman which was also a LIE. Bobbi Kriss has already confirmed that Bobby was abusive to Whitney and it was physical. Whitney already said he was abusive to her in her LAST interview with Oprah. I don't know Whitney Houston's story very well but I think she was maybe into light drugs before Bobby but Bobby was also into drugs and when they got together they BOTH went in DEEPLY. But I find it funny how her family has confirmed this as well, he with nothing to really promote, comes out and defends himself and its still not good enough. But the FACT are the FACTS, they've been broken up he is in another relationship, no drama ('cept that DUI) and seems sober & clean (the ONLY way Brooke Payne will ALLOW him to even tour with New Edition).
