EVERYBODY'S GETTING A NETWORK: Diddy, Tyler Perry, Magic Johnson, & More

It's almost like Oprah gifted her celebrity friends with one of her favorite things--a cable network!  But it wasn't her doing.  Diddy, Tyler Perry, Magic Johnson are just a few of the powerful celebs who have announced (more) immediate plans for their very own tv networks.

Deets inside...

After previous reports said this was coming down the pipeline, Sean "Diddy" Combs made his official announcement today to reveal REVOLT, his new cable TV network he has teamed up with other investors to create.

According to the network, it is described as follows:

REVOLT is a revolution in music on television, a place where artists and their viewers come together and engage with technology and social media. It's a channel where new artists can share their work in the way it was meant to be: raw, uncut, and uncensored. REVOLT was selected by Comcast to be the first music network to truly leverage the power of social media, fueling the live music dialogue and influencing the music culture for the video-centric generation.

Hopefully this won't be a channel mainly used as a platform for Diddy/Bad Boy projects.  But it's a huge deal nonetheless.

REVOLT was selected as one of four new minority-owned independent networks to be broadly distributed on Comcast Cable systems between July 2012 and January 2014.   Diddy commented:

I'm honored by the opportunity to be part of this effort to bring diverse programming to the masses. Marked by this partnership with Comcast, my hope is that this new network will spark a revolution in entertainment and encourage other media and communications companies to bring REVOLT to their audiences.

I'm thrilled to be at the helm to usher in a completely new model of television that brings together the artist community, social media, and cutting edge technology.  The opportunity to create a home for music, artists, and fans to communicate in an authentic way is truly unique. REVOLT will celebrate and recreate the platform that helped launch my career, and give the world a new way to experience music on television.

Check out the video above of Diddy talking about his new network.

Entrepreneur and NBA Hall of Famer Earvin “Magic” Johnson, in partnership with GMC TV, also has a network project scooped up by Comcast called Aspire.

Aspire is dedicated to delivering enlightening, entertaining and positive programming to African-Americans families, including movies, documentaries, short films, music, comedy, visual and performing arts, and faith and inspirational programs. it's also set to celebrate the successes, achievements and accomplishments of the African-American community and create new opportunities for the next generation of African-American visionaries. The network will launch by summer 2012.

Magic commented:

“Aspire will be a network that encourages and challenges African-Americans to reach for their dreams and will appeal to all generations. Aspire will celebrate our heritage, our groundbreaking achievements and the fearless talent that has shaped American culture. I’m most excited about Aspire creating opportunities for the new voices, new visions and the next generation of storytellers."

Fab!

Meanwhile, Tyler Perry hit up Jay Leno's show recently and confirmed his new tv network.  He said he's contemplating naming it TylerVision (but reports also say "Tyler TV" is being considered).  And no, he won't be competing with Oprah's OWN.

Tyler already has umpteen shows on TBS and even more movies under the Lionsgate brand.  So Lionsgate is teaming up with Mr. Perry to launch his own cable tv network.

On how a Tyler Perry cable venture might be rolled out, Lionsgate "could buy and rebrand a not-fully distributed channel, or pursue a “nesting strategy” with a channel it already has, including TV Guide."

BONUS: Bounce TV, the nation's first-ever, free broadcast television network marketed exclusively to African-American audiences, launched recently and director Will Packer and businessman Andrew Young are at the helm.  HuffPost Black Voices has the story.

I'm all about minority ownership.  So all of this gets a thumbs up from me.  Congrats fellas!

Great more buffoonery not one

Great more buffoonery not one mention of original dramas or soaps. No mention of news on these networks for blacks. Just more content from the white owned and controlled studios and good chance still controlled by whites for blacks. Wake Up people these networks will be no more then a waste of cable space like BET and TV One. No news, no original movies of us by us, no dramas with blacks as the lead characters, no news magazine shows just countless sitcoms and good chance reality shows of us looking like fools. I'll pass on these channels come back to me with a channel that's balanced and will serve the needs of all 14 million black house holds not a select few. We are in need of news, dramas, black made for tv movies about our stories and so much more is needed then the same sitcoms, song and dance we have been subjected to since the days of Amos and Andy back in the 50's. WAKE UP my people stop being bamboozled.

TVOne has one redeeming show:

TVOne has one redeeming show: Unsung. And the Kathy Hughes interviews they used to have as well as the reruns of 90s black sitcoms.

Please TV One is no better

Please TV One is no better then Centric and BET. Another black/white owned channel with no news daily, no news magazine shows, no original made for tv movies about us or our history. They have the same sitcoms, paid for content from the white studios and nothing new nor different. Wake up people stop being bamboozled by lies.

I have mixed feelings about

I have mixed feelings about this... I'm happy to see these brothers' making major moves, but I feel as if they are always capitalizing off of the black dollar without investing in our community. Tyler Perry is an exception to the above statement because he actually does a lot for the black community. Let me be clear in articulating the meaning in "investing" in the black community. I don't mean going to the hood and bringing Christmas toys to the kids every year. I mean setting up scholarships and centers to teach children how to read and write. I mean forming camps that will allow children to learn how to be engineers or doctors. What are these men doing for the black community? Nothing. However, we're doing everything for them and that's making their bank accounts richer. SMH

To God be the glory. Out of

To God be the glory. Out of the shackles in the back of someone's yard who would have thought you'd see african americans in the position of power today? Barack Obama, C.Rice, Oprah Winfrey, Bob Johnson, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Beyonce & Jay-z, Magic Johnson, Sean Combs, Michelle Obama, Tyler Perry, Don Lemon...etc. Thank you for giving african americans power & a voice in this world. Despite the troubles that may have been associated with some, none the less they have lead the packs in turning the stereotype for African Americans around. If we can stray away from BBW, Real Housewives, etc. and bring a little bit of our viewing power to these networks, the sky is the limit. Thanks Martin Luther King, Malcom X, Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman...etc for paving the way for even the slightest consideration.....

Not only romance; how about

Not only romance; how about suspense, thrillers, horror. Love me some Tananarive Due. Her stories are so vivid. I am always put right there on the scene; seeing every detail and the characters as much as my mind can visualize and comprehend. I am always part of the story but not the character. An onlooker. Her stories are so amazing.

Tyler Perry, for me, is always a testament of how God can move one's life. He has truly been blessed beyond measure and am so happy for him. I am equally proud of Sean and Earl. Just very very inspiring! What say you Rush Limbaugh? Your friend Natasha said "Hopefully this won't be a channel mainly used as a platform for Diddy/Bad Boy projects". You think Diddy got where he is by being a nimrod? He can be a dirty philanderer but he has a head for business. Take notes.

YES! YES! YES! These are the

YES! YES! YES! These are the types of efforts and accomplishments that should be applauded. So proud of these brothers for continuing to knock down doors and break glass ceilings! It is LONG OVERDUE that minorities hold stakes in major companies and not just "contribute" to making the white man a billionaire! I hope ALL of these channels succeed! I just hope we see more WOMEN join the ranks of Oprah (OWN) and Cathy Hughes (TV One) who are the only women who have launched their own tv networks! SN: I hope they DON'T bring any trashy reality programming to their networks such as BBWives, RHOA and Love & HipHop. We need progressive, forward-thinking programming made for intellectuals that will ADVANCE the black race -- not humiliate it!

In my honest opinion about

In my honest opinion about this matter,I detest and despise Sean John ''The Massive Ego having Streethug/Womanizer/all-around nitwit'' Combs,I also do NOT trust Earvin ''Magic/DoubleCross'' Johnson after the 2004 debacle where his big mouth and unmitigated arrogance helped {along with Kobe ''SuperCheat'' Bryant's continuous whining to Los Angeles Lakers Owner Jerry Buss to trade Shaquille O'Neal and fire the greatest coach in NBA history in Phil Jackson all because of Kobe's insatiable need to stand alone in the spotlight after it was both Shaq and Phil assistance that helped Kobe win 3 consecutive World Titles} to destroy what could have been a tremendous dynasty if it had been allowed to remain intact in L.A. and despite my admiration for Tyler Perry with him being the only one of the three men mentioned that I actually respect,I have serious concerns with the direction and content of his network given the lackluster quality of his movies and his horrible and his perpetually humorless and unentertaining tv shows and over the proposed network's future success. Lastly, until something of signifigance materializes with either of these networks,I will continue to have my support behind both Johnathan Rogers and TVOne. Go TVOne!!

As much as I love to see

As much as I love to see black people get their own; in this case, it feels somewhat divisive. I understand that white America runs all the other networks and continues to ignore programming that shows diversity inclusive of not only blacks, but Hispanics and Asians; but these black owned networks, will continue to divide us as people. I want black people to succeed, to have our stories told and show our greatness; but who will be watching besides us?
