The Nominations Are In! "The Help" Stars Viola Davis & Octavia Spencer Nab ACADEMY AWARD NODS!

Congrats are in order for YBF chicks Viola Davis & Octavia Spencer!  The fab actresses each landed a nomination for the 2012 Academy Awards.

Deets inside...

It's official.  Viola Davis has been nominated for Best Actress for her riveting role in The Help.  She's up against friend Meryl Streep for The Iron Lady, Rooney Mara for Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Michelle Williams for A Week With Marilyn, and Glenn Close.

And the other star of The Help, Octavia Spencer, nabbed the Best Supporting Actress nomination.  Her good friend, the hilarious Bridesmaids star Melissa McCarthy, was also nominated in the category.

Funny actress Octavia called in to "GMA" right after the announcement just minutes ago and said, "I am so over the moon, once we're done with all of this I'm going to do a drive by...[rest is inaudible]."

The Help also grabbed the coveted Best Picture nomination, along with the following 9 films: War Horse, The Artist, Money Ball, The Descendants, The Tree of Life, Midnight In Paris, The Help, Hugo, and Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close.

The 84th Annual Academy Awards air live on ABC, Sunday, February 26th at 7p ET.

Congrats to the nominees!

Congrats to Viola and Octavia, both were riveting in The Help. Hopefull this will create other roles for them in Hollywierd beyond the usual stereotypical ones usually reserved for black women.

But why can't we get nominations for Black movies that don't have Whites in it....they tell our story even better but white Hollywood doesn't support it.

Hopefully, they get it right

Congrats to Octavia Spencer

Congrats to Octavia Spencer and Viola Davis...but it is BITTERSWEET!!! Just 73 years ago when Hattie McDaniel was nominated and won an Oscar for protraying a housemaid. I believe that we are STILL being accepted in society ONLY in a certain CONSISTENT protrayal which is NOT COOL. JUST WAIT until next year (2013)... When we get nominations for Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained" which is about the revenge of an African-American slave on his Caucasian former master. Our history is BEING written by Caucasian writers. (NO OFFENSE) African-American writers STAND UP!!! Once again...nominations for being an escaped prisoner, poverty-stricken, housemaid, abusive/drug addict, crooked police cops, pimps, drug dealers, vixens, showgirl/prostitute, obese, althetic, illiterate, gangsters, and sidekicks. Even though there are great previous Academy Award nominations but there is a NEED for more diversity. Overall, if you do not feel respected in society no matter what race or gender, do your research and do NOT buy the product because it is WRONG.

I was reluctant to go and see

I was reluctant to go and see this movie because I didn’t want to watch a movie about the old south, not a fan of racial movies. I went because of friend of mine from another country wanted to go and she doesn’t get the race relation problems we have in America. She said “all societies have the ‘haves and the have nots’ and some are reduced to a similar form of slavery”. So went to see the movie and I am glad that we did, because she got a deeper understanding of what it was like to be a black person in America during that time, plus I actually enjoyed the film. We don’t need a film like this every year, but it’s a story that should be told, and these women told it well.

@ Honey Bear That was the

@ Honey Bear That was the most adorable comment and well stated. I know this is a well told story. I read the book and I know Viola is a good actress. My complain is really about Hollywood and the lack of diverse roles. Just look at the Leading Female category. There is a lot of diversity there. You also know who's going to win. Hollywood needs to change and the only way that wll happen is if we send a message we want to see better stories. I'm just personally tired of the Historical racial movies for the same reasons you stated in your comment.

I agree with some of you,

I agree with some of you, Octavia's demeanor and the way she dresses makes her seem older than she is. She's got to step her game up. I don't think pink was the best choice for Viola. Congrats to both ladies. Its a shame that in 2012 we a still getting Oscar nominations for playing maids.

Whatever movie you feel that may be. You already stated your opinion on this page, and I am sure you will do so over and over again, as you tend to do. ? I am not responding to anything you write, shouldn’t you mopping the deck on Rhianna's Navy? Teenagers think they know it all. PS- you are the last person to call anyone brainwashed. @ Dam Shame You try to

@ Dam Shame You try to dismiss me as a child but the problem with that approach is you sure don't act like any respectable "Adult" I know. If you don't like my comments that is totally fine but you don't speak for anyone BUT yourself. But you know full well that when you gave me your personal opinion that it had absolutely no value so you decided to then tell me what others felt. LMAO Typical POWERLESS BULLY. I like Rihanna and you don't.....NOW what? Feel better sweetie? Please don't lecture me like you're some superior adult. You're anything BUT! And trust me this will be the last time I will address any comment from the likes of you. Again...have a nice day. :)
Furious Styles's picture

She’s not the only one. Did

She’s not the only one. Did you read the comments from yesterday? A bunch of people said you need to “take your meds” and somebody was your doctor at one point. I don’t think you’re a real person, I think your paid by the site so it can read “119 comments”. All you ever do is try to get people to have the same opinion as you do. God forbid they do not then you spend all your time trying to convince them otherwise or call them names. You are so judgmental to other celebrities but your precious Queen gets a pass at everything. I bet she could spit at the president and you would say “he was probably on fire”. I never encountered someone who came straight out of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, read this: Wounded children grow up and become wounded adults. Since no one taught us how to heal ourselves, we seek momentary relief by always trying to be right. Yes, many of us have a need to be right all the time. For we associate being right with being worthy. The person who feels that need most of the time is someone who needs to feel superior or empowered very frequently. By insisting on being right, they feel elevated above those who they can prove wrong. This individual will argue their point to the bitter end. They would lie, exaggerate, or do anything it takes to prove they are right. In the end, that person may feel superior but the impression left after they are gone is one of distaste and avoidance for that individual. The underlying cause of the need to be right is fear. This is a deep-seated fear of being wrong and losing credibility or control. When someone disagrees, this individual feels threatened and goes on the defensive, trying desperately to maintain control so they can feel comfortably safe again. …. I am sure you will have a witty comeback. Every time we come on this site ybf makes money, so make that money honey.
Honey Bear's picture

@ Honey Bear I think you're

@ Honey Bear I think you're FUNNY! I am truly amused by your comments. Seriously! I really liked your earlier comment about the Help. I felt that comment was honest and well articulated..... But let me assure you that I am a 100% real person. I don't quite understand how you would assume I'm NOT real? I also love blogs. YBF is pretty great! I also love a good debate! I don't however have this "need" to be right. It just so happens that I'm often correct a majority of the time (I do very well on academic matters) but there have been those rare occasions when I have been DEAD wrong and I don't know if you've seen but I have no problem stating I've misjudged something and I issue an apology. Rihanna is a special person to me. I guess you did not have that special entertainer who spoke to you with their message and style. Rihanna speaks to many girls my age I know people who like Rihanna get it completely. I'm also independent and curious and yes I have strong views. I'm not not one of those people who accepts any and everything. I like to think I have very discerning tastes and high expectations. Both my parents are Virgos. I also can laugh at myself. It's clear that some people are uncomfortable with people who have larger than life personalities as well as people who are very accomplished and creative. Like Rihanna I have people on this blog who like to write false comments or lock me into some box or try and dismiss my point of view. I say more power to them! I really don't have a problem with people who don't agree with me. I'm also 98% comfortable in my skin but at the same time I'm always learning and growing. But if you think that this funny psychological diagnosis you are offering (based on my comments) is valid you're greatly mistaken. I don't think you know me well enough to use this pedestrian diagnosis effectively. We can use this description to describe any number of people almost like the weekly astrology predictions. We can all take bits and pieces of info and apply it and it may appear to be scientific when it's anything but. I come to a blog to make a point and to at time argue a point like I'm doing with the topic of the HELP and the nomination process. I'm also sharing information that I have found useful to help others. But when I defend Rihanna (and creativity) I'm not dealing with the same types of people so I employ a different strategy. But again thanks for this posting. I found it highly entertaining and FUN!
Furious Styles's picture

“It just so happens that I'm

“It just so happens that I'm often correct a majority of the time”- so says you. “I've misjudged something and I issue an apology.”- hardly, you general insult then move on “Rihanna is a special person to me.”- we all know this to be true, you’re obsessed. You critique others on their actions but all things Rhianna get a thumbs up, something aint right there sweetie. “this pedestrian diagnosis”- in what way is this pedestrian, when this is the go to book for people within this profession? You sure about those grades you’re getting? “astrology predictions”- you comparing this book to something you see in the paper, now that’s a pedestrian comment. “I found it highly entertaining and FUN!”- that’s what the book said you would say, you should be find the nearest therapist. For a New Yorker to call people and things pedestrian all the time, is actually quite ironic since the vast majority of New Yorkers don’t drive but walk, cab it or use mass transit most of the time. I grew up there. I know 80 years old who never learned to drive because NY is one of the only places in the world where you can live there your whole life and not drive. NY has a million things to do and you spend your time on ybf, now that my dear just proves the analysis I posted to be true.
Honey Bear's picture

@ Honey Bear I mean this

@ Honey Bear I mean this really! You are FUN! I like your comments. FYI.... Pedestrian....in the sense I'm using it does not refer to people who walk. But that is one meaning. Pedestrian also has another meaning which is...lacking in vitality, imagination, distinction, etc. Something that is commonplace; prosaic or dull. See now this is a good exchange. I've taught you something. And you taught me. FYI...you can apply a proper mental diagnosis based on comments on a blog. You need a battery of tests to do that....Hence my astrology comment. They way you are applying this theory is the same way people think what they read in an astrology... applies to them. :)

Thank you @ Girl BYE. I will

Thank you @ Girl BYE. I will NEVER join the Chorus of congratulating Viola Davis & Octavia Spencer for playing "uppity" maids in 2012. I really want to encourage some of you to read a book I discovered last term. Donald Bogle is a film historian and author of six books concerning African Americans in film and on television. He is an instructor at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts and at the University of Pennsylvania. Donald has this book called Toms, Coons, Mulattoes, Mammies and Bucks: An Interpretative History of Blacks in Films, was published in 1973. In it, he identified five basic stereotypical film roles available to African-American actors and actresses: the servile, avuncular "tom"; the simple-minded and cowardly "coon"; the tragic, and usually female, mulatto; the fat, dark-skinned "mammy"; and the irrational, hypersexual male "buck"...etc. It's shocking how little roles have changed for Blacks over the years. There are still the same one dimensional parts. You know EXACTLY how this will play out. Viola will lose out and Octavia will win. And AFTER the Oscars neither will have any interesting roles to play. I mean look at Cuba Gooding Jr., Halle Berry what good roles have they been given since they won? Catwoman? Snow Dogs?....very few people will EVER have the Career of a Denzel Washington. We need to demand more and stop accepting Hollywoods myopic roles and stereotypes. This is not an achievement but a facade or a trinket masked to make the academy appear "diverse" when it's anything BUT! I'm a little tired of the self esteem awards that the Academy deigns for people of Color.
Furious Styles's picture

You that detract this movie

You that detract this movie and the roles obviously have no idea of the story. This is your history people. This stuff happened for real. It's deeper than them just portraying maids. We didn't have any choice but be maids at a point in our history. We need to remember these types of stories so we can see just how far we have come! And this was the 60s its is not that deep into our past for it to be forgotten and we are still fighting racism so don't dismiss this. These women were strong in spite of their station. It was these types of simple people that pushed the movement along. THEY were the soldiers on the front line risking life and home.
Cleojonz's picture

For once I agree with

For once I agree with @furious and I@M not joining this no way this madness needs to stop seriously and yall already know they just nominated them for the sake of it cos those old wrinkly white women are these awards home. Now let's see next year if red tails which portratys black people in a positive light will get any nominations. As long as black will continue to rejoice with awards for these types of roles we'll always be nomianted for these types of mess. I'm sorry but am not supporting this. Then NAACP this year has a lot white people nominated for good awards as well wtf? NAACP is a sell out and I wouldn't be surprised if there's no one black person making any decisions there. **SIGHS WITH DESPAIR**
