Gwyneth Paltrow Talks Black Hair, Says Beyonce And Rihanna Should Have Covered "VOGUE" Long Ago

NY Times bestselling author Steve Stoute sat down with Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow to talk about her views on Black and Jewish hair issues, her love of hip-hop, and why Beyonce and Rihanna deserved to be on the cover of VOGUE long before they actually landed it.

As part of his AOL Huff Post series, The Tanning Effect, Stoute chatted with the actress who's known for not holding her tongue. Growing up in an all white neighborhood in Santa Monica, Gwyneth Paltrow, who counts The Carters as her and her hubby Chris Martin's best friends. admits she saw very little "tanning" in her surroundings.

But it was the influence of her father, Bruce Paltrow, and his groundbreaking tv show "The White Shadow," that showed her the true meaning of diversity. Some folks are saying she's factually incorrect, though, because "Star Trek" supposedly showed the first interracial kiss on TV, not her father's show.

When discussing media representations of African Americans, Gwyneth brought up Rihanna and her bestie Beyonce finally appearing on the cover of VOGUE magazine.

"I don't want to bemoan the fact that it should've happened 50 years ago, because it's here now. And it's like the way I see it is that I have two little kids who are understanding the world in a time when Rihanna is on the cover of Vogue, and we have a black president. So their eyes are being as if they're experiencing the world for the first time. All of this stuff is just root -- it's normal stuff for them. And that to me is what's so incredible."

She added,

"When my daughter understood what a president was, it was a black man. It's not like me, where I grew up with all of these old white guys one after another ... Their perspective on race and everything is completely open and completely different to how it was when I was a kid."

And she also revealed that Jewish girls and Black girls have similar haircare issues. "The heat makes the kitchen go crazy!" She shared that when moisture hits the back of her neck it ruins a good blowout! What you know about the "kitchen" Gwyneth?? Let me find out....

Why do black ppl always need

Why do black ppl always need VALDATION from white ppl? Why does have to ask her that INGNORANT question – ask her about her career, about hip hop music , etc. But don’t ask her about black hair, bec white ppl have hair issues just like us, but you don’t hear them making TV shows about it or blogs about it. They also have color issues as well – if u have blue eyes blond hair – u r ideal beauty. If u have darker hair and features – u r more brainy but not looked as beautiful. Asian, Hispanics – they all have the same issues but we r the only once taking it to the next level, making documentary about be darker-skin – when light-skinned and dark-skinned get discriminated against. And yes I understand some darker skinned ppl have had it tough bec of their up-brings – their own parents started the color hate that then continue into adult hood. I’m a dark-skinned women who is always told ‘you’re so beautiful for a dark-skinned gir & u got a body’ and when they say that I tell them “black is beautiful and it comes in all beautiful shades”. My sister is light-skinned equally beautiful – we’ve never had those self-esteem issues. We knew that men have different taste; there were guys that would come after me VS. But then again my mother ALWAYS told us how beautiful we were growing up – she never made us feel different. I have dark-skinned friends that hate on light-skinned girls – they always “she thinks she’s all that bec she’s light-skinned’. That’s a form of insecurity. The same go for light-skinned women – who grew up with ppl telling them they r the ideal beauty of black ppl. Either way, it’s wrong but all of us go thru this and we don’t always have to be on the FRONT about it. No need to do TV shows – it’s never going to go away bec we r all raised differently. If God ask me tomorrow how I would like to return back to the earth, I would say “No different, Father – u made me prefect!”

if you can count on your hand how many black friends you have or made a difference in your world than nothing has changed? That's not fair, you have to remember change doesn't happen over night and we are not that far removed from slavery and the civil rights movement my grandma lived through the civil right movement, and her mother worked scrubbing for white folks floors. I say all this to say our society is slowly changing, but realistically there are still all white neighborhoods, as well as all black neighborhoods. I as an African american i can only count on one hand the white friends i have or white people that have made a difference in my life, why is that? Because i didnt com into contact with many people other than blacks and Hispanics growing up in the bronx section of NY. And the white folks i did come in contact with were my teachers and to me that was normal. I met my 1st italian girlfriend at 23, and that's just how it was. So i can imagine that it can be the same for people of other races as well. Now at 29 i live in a predominately Jewish neighborhood. The kids in my sons class are a many colors, his 1st white friend wont be at age 23, and the one white person he can count on his hand that has made a notable difference in his life wont just be his teacher. Things are changing stop holding to things never changing. Like Gwyenth said her children like mine will never see the world in the same light that we saw it.
