AGREE OR DISAGREE: DJ Khaled Defends Using The "N" Word

DJ Khaled can be heard all over urban radio as he's dropped some hip hop classics, including "All I Do Is Win." But now a debate has arisen about his use of the "N" word, especially since he is of Palestinian descent. Listen to DJ Khaled defend his using of the "N" word and decide if you buy his argument.....

All lot of rappers and comedians use the "N" word in their music and their standup....but usually they are of African American descent.

And while most folks have a problem with the use of the word in general, what happens when people who aren't Black or African American claim the word?

That's the debate going on now as DJ Khaled has felt compelled to defend his use of the "N" word.

During a recent interview he said,

“I grew up like that. [N--ga] is slang. It’s actually a positive word, the way I use it."

DJ Khaled went on to reveal to DJ Green Lantern that while growing up in Florida he was even called a “sand n—ga.”  So does that give him a right to claim the word as a part of his struggles too?

Listen to the interview and speak on it.....

I agree DJ K should not say

I agree DJ K should not say the word; however, the black artists making music with him should hold some accountability. They should check him at the door, lay down the ground rules and carry on. The black artists cannot give a pass to DJ K to use the from all black Americans.....period point blank. Side note: Evelyn from BBW uses it as well and she feels justified as well. It's sad.

The fact that he says "oh

The fact that he says "oh what's that word" is just a testament to how "dumb" he is and how his vocabulary skills are severely deficient.

ALL YALL SHUT THE HELL UP!

ALL YALL SHUT THE HELL UP! It shouldn't matter if you are hispanic, middle eastern, black or half black.. THAT WORD IS HATEFUL -- it doesn't matter who's saying it in what context. Black people say it all the time, but "we" shouldn't get a pass to say it. If you don't want others (white, middle eastern, etc. etc. to use it ---THEN STOP USING IT YOUR DAMN SELVES!!! Black people can be soooo stupid sometimes, I swear!!! And to the people who wants to "boycott" non black artist music for using the word...That's absurd!!!...If that's the case boycott the black artist who says it as well...NO ONE SHOULD GET A PASS!!!

FYI-I'm black. Every self-respecting African-American knows that it's 2 types of us. Black people and niggas. Niggas are ignorant hoodrat assholes that don't vote and talk about the man holding them down. Black people are the exact opposite. My problem with dj Khaled is that people like him give the entire world permission to call us niggas. Why not? We buy his shit and shake our ass to it in the club. I say boycott his ass. And if other people think it's fair to say nigga then it's only fair that all us blacks get on a boat, go enslave some non-black people, beat they ass, rape the women, and have them pick cotton a few hundred years, and then fuck them up so bad that even in 2011 the first HALF Black president can't even do his damn job. People look at racism on a day to day basis. It's institutionally engrained in America. As American as apple pie. Cuz with all my freedoms I will never be looked at as equal to a white person. Cuz even president Obama catches hell

Lol I don't agree with what

Lol I don't agree with what DjKahled was saying, however! I believe that you may have just had a nigga moment "And if other people think it's fair to say nigga then it's only fair that all us Blacks get on a boat, go enslave some non-black people, beat they ass, rape the women, and have them pick cotton a few hundred years, and then fuck them up so bad that even in 2011 the first HALF Black president can't even do his damn job" WOW! . I don't agree with you saying that there are two types of African Americans. Test your theory, find both types of African Americans and have a random white person call them a NIGGER to their face and see what the outcome is. If there was truly a difference, or truth to your statement, the parties should react differently don't you think? I think Black people pick and choose when to pull that card out the back of their pocket. We all have it in us; the thing is, when, where, and how we decide to use that card. Some Black people proudly wear that shit on their chest which makes them extremely ignorant constantly. IDK maybe I'm wrong.

Ok, yes the word is bad, I

Ok, yes the word is bad, I really don't use it myself. But sometimes middle eastern people use that word and/or the word is used towards them calling them "sand n**gas". So, why the uproar over him using the word just because he's Palestenian? If the word shouldn't be used, it just shouldn't be used period. Not because he is not Black.... oh and I actually thought he was hispanic.... obviously not...
Fash's picture

Are you middle eastern? He

Are you middle eastern? He does not look hispanic! And let me tell you cause I know Middle Eastern people are some Racist people not predujice I said racist! Study the history. If any of them say Keffir that word is same as the "N" word. They think black people are lower than animals. I do not understand why Janet Jackson is dating that man she is with. They will date and use a black woman but never marry one. Yes racist people sleep and have sex with the people they hate and hell they will even treat you alright but, they believe you are nothing. It is how they are raised. They will kiss butt to white people. If they know a black person has money they will do the same to them too.... kiss their butt. I would never hire them for anything because they bring bad karma and I love everyone but I stay away from those who have hate and negativity in their heart who ever they may be.God loves everyone I believe all the negative judgemental people whose hearts are closed will not be with the almighty in the end because that place is love. Just beware and read about the middle eastern cultures. They have black middle easterners too you know and they are treated badly too just and blacks in this country.
Anonymous's picture

I think you need a history

I think you need a history lesson. Muslims do not say "kaffir", but "kafir". Kaffir is a mistranslated word Portuguese first started using to derogatively slur people of African descent. Kafir is only used in Muslim culture to refer to people who aren't muslim, or "nonbelievers." It aint got shyt to do with race. I love how you bring god into this shyt after that big ass generalization you just posted. Some christian. smh

Yeah with that nose he is not

Yeah with that nose he is not hispanic! He does not look hispanic maybe too someone who has never been around hispanic people or to someone who things all brown people look alike. That is like saying Deepak looks hispanic and that is some bullshit!
Anonymous's picture

For all those who keep saying

For all those who keep saying this is not a big deal you need a history lesson. Ask your Grandparents or your Great Grandparents if its not a big deal. You think becuase people say the word with reckless abandon that its ok. Its not! The word is was and is used to degrade african american people. Ask yourself this, is a white, hispanic or asian person came up, called you a Nigga how what that make you feel? Just because they give you dap or whatever, talking bout "Whats up my nigga?" doesn't make the terms any less than what it is. Ask your Grandmother how she felt when those white folks called her a nigga or gal. Ask your Grandfather how much it hurt when those white men where spitting on him while calling him a nigga? This generation thinks the past doesn't affect them and people need to "get over it". Ask your Great Grandparents if they have gotten over being somebodies property? Ask them if they've gotten over been second class citizen or being beaten? Tell your Grandparents and Great Grandparents to "get over it".

I don't see why ppl DON'T

I don't see why ppl DON'T think its a big deal..folks never call a jewish person or non jewish ppl a spic, or tell them to just get over the holocust. So why SHOULDN"T black people want to erradicate the word nigga from thier vocabulary? and why are they told to just suck it up and accept it because it's part of the culture? People that think this way are beyond ignorant and cannot be helped in any way, shape, form, or fashion. DJ Khaled needs to be ashamed of himself, and he of all ppl being of middle eastern decent should know better. No one would call him a raghead and get away with it why?? Because a group of ppl would be hightly offended. Black ppl are the only race that continues to degrade themselved and let other races do it to them as well.. all in the name of culture and entertainment. This is pure Bull*&^)!!!

The most ignorant thing I

The most ignorant thing I EVER heard was a dude on TV say he turned Nigga into Never Ignorant Getting Goals Accomplished so it meant something positive. There is no way to "own" the word when it comes from something so negative. Listen to Khaled and how completely ignorant he is - he can't even come up with the word derogatory when he speaks. SMH that people think this word can be turned into something positive or by using it everyday - it lessens the negativity around the word. There is nothing positive about the word and its use (by everyone) must stop.

If it offends black people so

If it offends black people so much when any other race uses the N. word, black people shouldn't use it either. If the word is so offensive, why do we want to hold onto it as something only we can say? If I use the word and you are within my circle of friends, so can you regardless of your race, creed, or color. If its not supposed to be offensive when we as black people use it, how is it offensive when DJ Khaled, a man who only does music with black people (who use the N. word a 100 times in one song) does it? Stop looking for different reasons to be upset and take advantage of all the opportunities that are available to us as black people that were not available back when that word actually came into existence. We are not slaves anymore, so get out of that mentality and let it go nigga.

I do not know who or what you

I do not know who or what you are but it is not something to get over. Not for me all the time but for respect of the ancestors.Other races know exactly what they are doing when they use the word because they know the history if only a little. Im sure their parents have talked to them neg or pos about the word. Blacks use it sometimes because sometimes people make laughter or jokes with stuff that hurts them deeply it is a coping mechanism for some. Should they learn other ways to cope with pain? yes. It does not been that other races should use the word because in the backs of their minds they know what saying it will do.Trust, I know.

...What I want to know though

...What I want to know though is why all the general debate is focused on what people of another race might or might not refer to black as? (thus none of the focus being on what whites, arabs, or other races could be refered to as)?? There aren't any debates going on as to whether it's ok to refer to whites as the "c-word" or others..or if black or pakistani rappers should use that word and it be alright.. Shouldn't every race deal with this debate? ie What's fair in arts?..and also on youtube, and on twitter, and the internet. That would at least make thus phenomenom culturally interesting & worthwhile to investigate!! It also seems to me no-one is willing to debate what effects it could have on the person to constantly be singled out in song and culture, which is supposed to uplift spirits not bring them down! - And the complete fallacy (or cope-out of an excuse) going on right now is that the word is used in a "positive" manner. Really!? Most everytime I've heard it used in song; either in the intonation of the rapper, or else the lyrical context, it had a seemingly negative conotation to it and could be replaced by any other term like "scrub", "simpleton"...Call it artistic drought or whatever, the word is used to replaced several more. ie If on the schoolyard it's don't act like "f*g", for the rappers it's "don't be a n*gga". - One would have to be truly oblivious not to be able to pick up on nuances in any of those songs out there. Now one may chose to disregard that aspect of things, but to justify the use of the word by saying it's positive is indeed a fallacy..
jtmb's picture

We are all individuals first.

We are all individuals first. Everyone copes differently. Some rappers using the word, yes. When you are called that growing up by people who are not black it can make a person feel like shit, right. When you are trying to find your way into this world sometimes a black may call another black the word and it does not feel the same because they know each others pain and sometimes it is away of saying I understand you. It is not something another race can understand. Other races should not say that word to another black person. Intellectually, you may understand but the word you will never feel in your soul. Yes, it is just a word and this is a new generation but pain never goes away. When you look into the eyes of an old person you know they had alot of pain and went through alot with that word.Ofcourse they would not want another race to say it and some could not and would not want to hear it even from another black. They all will have some understanding if another black said it whether they approved or not.In these songs being made that is where that particular artist is in his life with the word it does not reflect all blacks but as a none black just remember the word brings pain to all blacks no matter how they may react. It is best for you not to say it because no matter how we look at it there can never be a pos light of that word coming from a non white person.

Point taken, but anytime I've

Point taken, but anytime I've heard the N. word used negatively in a rap song, it's been used by a black artist, so why are we all of sudden focusing on DJ Khaled using it? Obviously Natasha thinks that only black people should be able to say it, that's why she put this story on her website. She doesn't have any stories of black artist like Jay-Z having to explain why they use it on here. The N. word is such a common staple in so may black people's vocabulary that it's racist of them to say "I can use this word every time I refer to someone my color, but if you my white friend that had nothing to do with slavery uses it, it's the most horrible infraction in the world." Think about it, If a word is bad for every other race in the world to say, than it's racist for one race to say "only we can say it."
Eric Eshun's picture

If some Black people have a problem with it...especially OUR elderly...who many of them don't like than....people that are not black shouldn't be saying that....that is just how I feel about. You don't look Cool, you not In....Just because For High...Lil Wayne is sayin it's okay when you alone...don't mean it's okay. HormelChili's picture

Hahahahahahaha, you're a

Hahahahahahaha, you're a mess! But also very correct. I'm a 25 year old young woman and my circle of friends and I agree that my generation and the ones after us have no respect for what our elders have gone through. If older blacks say "no", then there is some validity to that. You will hardly EVER see someone of Middle Eastern decent (using this example for the DJ) disrespect an elder in their community. Let alone allow their dire need for acceptance to allow them to hurt their community. I wish we as blacks loved ourselves and respected our community enough to realize this

I also did a search to find

I also did a search to find out what other races are saying on the topic, and come to find out there are countless of forums frequented by people of white origins where they debated the use of the "n-word", and most of them defended its use..claiming it's out of.."fairness"! (because blacks used the word). Again fairness to them is not debating whether a potentially deragatory word used to refer their race should be mainstreamed and legitimized through music as well - but it is to maintain their right to refer to another by any other word of their vocab. -- So obviously, their view of "fairness" is very different to mine.. That is probably why you can surf any video on youtube/google at the moment, and see thousands of people use the "n-word" as an insult. Youtube/Google as a company has sponsored this from the getgo (probably also thinking it's "fair" ...AND profitable). They've so far categorically refused to censor, detract or punish the perpertrators in any way.. And that despite several campaigns launched by citizens in the black community and beyond.. So all of that stuff is very far reaching, and I wish rappers like Mr Khaled would use their money and fame to go against the like of Youtube/Google and their hypocritical business ways...Now THAT would be really be something worth the press. So what Khaled uses the N

So what Khaled uses the N word?! It's slang for God's sake! It's not supposed to be conventional. And despite the word's historical significance, the way it's used in slang is different from how it was originally used. As some others on this post have commented, EVERYBODY who is non-white is using the term! Asians, Latinos, Middle-Easterners, etc., etc. We need to get over this issue about who can or cannot use a slang word that's not used in a racist context. Why do we even feel the need to "claim" ownership of the N word in the first place? The notion is just so ridiculous. Admittedly, there is emotional pain behind the word's use, but we're in the 21st Century now and need to get over the pain. The N word is slang, that's all it is. Here's a short grammar lesson: There are 3 Englishes 1) slang/friendspeak, 2) conversational English, and 3) formal English. Your choice of English is dependent on your audience and environment. So each type of English has its place, just depends on the circumstances. So please, let's move on and talk about things that really matter in the world.
