NAACP Slams Tea Party Movement For Its Racist Antics

The NAACP has called the Tea Party Movement out for allowing racism to flow through their ranks and the constant insults thrown at President Barack Obama.

Read on for more...

At their 101st annual convention in Kansas City, Missouri, the NAACP passed a resolution condemning the Tea Party Movement for what's been seen as rampant racism around the county.

The NAACP's resolution comes on the heel of a controversial billboard comparing President Barack Obama to Adolf Hitler and Vladimir Lenin.  The billboard, posted by The North Iowa Tea Party chapter has ignited a heated debate about racism in the Tea Party.

In a statement, Ben Jealous, president and CEO of the NAACP said "We take no issue with the Tea Party. We believe in freedom of assembly and people raising their voices in a democracy."

"We take issue with the Tea Party's continued tolerance for bigotry and bigoted statements. The time has come for them to accept the responsibility that comes with influence and make clear there is no space for racism and anti-Semitism and other forms of bigotry in their movement."

Hilary Shelton, director of the NAACP's Washington bureau and senior vice president for advocacy and policy, echoed Jealous's comments in an interview with CNN saying:

"After observing Tea Party activities throughout the country -- which culminated with the outrageous and racist behavior of Tea Party activists during the historic congressional vote to pass into law comprehensive health care legislation -- the NAACP began more closely investigating the Tea Party. Specifically as it was reported to us that Tea Party activists spat on [Congressman] John Lewis, a veteran civil rights activist and associate to Dr. Martin Luther King, and called Congressman Emanuel Cleaver the 'N-word' and called [Congressman] Barney Frank ... one of the first openly gay members of Congress, the 'F-word.' "

Source

Now the NAACP is involved in a vicious public battle with the very vocal Tea Party movement and even Sarah Palin has jumped in the mix.

Do you think the Tea Party Movement is racist or just getting a bad rap cause of a few bad apples?

I want to take this

I want to take this opportunity to thank the Tea Party for electing Massachusetts Republican Scott Brown since he voted for the Financial Reform Bill and help the President of the United States with another legislative victory, thank you Tea Party. Have you heard of “Unintended Consequences” or “Blowback”? Was he working for the Tea Party, himself or our Country, hmmm only you can answer this one?

Dogmeat's picture

Dogmeat, I'm quite happy with

Dogmeat,

I'm quite happy with Scott Brown.

He voted for the fake financial reform bill, which is fine. While there's no financial reform in it, it's generally harmless. So Scotty gets to look like a bipartisan compromiser to his leftist Massachusetts electorate by voting for a meaningless bill.

As for "helping the President," go ask your friends and neighbors, "Hey, what do think about that awesome financial reform? What a win, huh?" As if a complete farce of a bill written by the corrupt Dodd and Frank is going to swing any moderates or turn out any base.

Go Scotty B!!!

As for the overall Tea Party, sure there are some nuts. But mainstream Republicans (Boehner et. al.) are the ones who drove this country into a ditch along with Bush and the Democrats. We need reform so desperately that I'll take a few kooks along with the wave of reformers.

What these idiots don't realize is that EVERY [president in history Republican or Democrat has passed laws and Bills that were socialist in their very nature.

The same people comparing President Obama to Hitler have swastikas hanging in their houses or tattooed on their backs. They really need legitimate hobbies outside of racism, hypocrisy and idiocy.

I dont think the NAACP should back down as a matter of fact they need to rally more and have campaigns I'd love to get involved and I will.......

The Tea Party is a racist

The Tea Party is a racist organization and the members who have joined it, those who have supported it, and those who sit silently in agreement with it, are racists as wel; the only people you're fooling are yourselves!

~ t's picture

The problem is this. Tea

The problem is this. Tea Party candidates will win a number of these congressional races because local districts are often safely partisan in nature. They can make their wild, unfounded claims, crazy accusations, etc., and win. That means not only are we likely to see an increase in Republican seats in both houses, we're likely to see more antics, more insanity, more stupidity. At the same time they're going to do everything they can to derail Obama's policies which will likely mean high unemployment, a moribund economy, and more compromises on policy positions that make no one happy.

That could literally mean that if the Republicans put up a legitimate candidate in 2012, they could win. Such a result is bad enough, but the likely response for the Democrats is to move further to the "middle" to placate voters. As we've seen over the last decade, the "middle" in American politics is basically on the verge of being an 80s Republican. Increasingly that means we'll have a political landscape of a conservative party and ratfuck insane parties. The former, given it's track record, slowly moving to the right, the latter, given it's track record, loudly screaming "socialism, communism, fascism!!!"

If we continue on this course, privatization will be socialism.

100% Co-sign! Arguably, one

100% Co-sign! Arguably, one of the best and most comprehensive statements ever written in this kid of blog! This Tea Party business is serious...it mirrors the upstart of the KKK very closely. The KKK started with a just a few people rebelling against the freedom of the Black slaves and the departure from the "old way of life" (slavery). A few years later, this small band of rebels had become huge, and their names synonymous with fear, lynchings, hurt, violence and death. This could be the fate of the Tea PArty if we are not mindful, careful, and watchful. Think it can't happen again...let us never fool ourselves....wise up and recognize that even the smallest of the world's demons can become the most powerful if given the space, time and opprtunity.

Obama is a socialist. So,

Obama is a socialist. So, what's the problem? This lawsuit isn't going to go anywhere. Although, the NAACP doesn't have much room to speak, it's a shill group that was created by whites to wrangle and control Black people's thoughts.

imnotthatstoopid's picture

Where were they when Bush

Where were they when Bush started an unnecessary war and sent their son's and daughter's to be killed in Iraq. Alllllll-right

WAK's picture

I think they honestly thought

I think they honestly thought it was going to be over in a flash and they (the WM) would once again exert their power and authority in the Middle East. Not only did it not turn out that way, but the war is still going on (and some say they are losing). So despite the fact that Bush was in power for 8 long years Obama gets blamed for everything because to blame themselves would be an admission that the white man failed.

The Tea Party needs to re-evaluate their priorities because white supremacy started dying in the late 90's - by dying I mean losing it's potency, racism isn't going anywhere anytime soon but globally people are no longer scared of white power. White men are no longer Kings of the Castle and the Chinese are coming up strong and fast, snapping at their heels. A president that doesn't look like them should be the least of their racist worries.

SaiSai's picture

what's even more ridiculous

what's even more ridiculous is that right wing advocates have got their panties in a bunch over the NBPP having charges against them dropped during Obama's term (yet the decision to drop these charges was made by the Bush administration and only recently carried out), yet they completely ignore the exploding numbers of white hate groups across the nation. But heaven forbid the New Black Panther Party show a little aggression (and I repeat, Obama is not the one who made the decision to drop the charges against them) and suddenly white folks are in a tizzy. they don't realize that minorities have been putting up with intimidation, threats and murder from NUMEROUS white hate groups for years and years. Oh, but when white folks feel a little uncomfortable then they cause a scene, conveniently ignoring the evils that their own are perpetuating.

aiych's picture

They may not have started out

They may not have started out as a racist movement but they certainly are now. They have no real logical arguments, they are misinformed and they play on people's irrational, (closet) racist fears. They feel threatened by Obama because he does not look like them, and they feel that because of this difference he cannot possibly think like them or be looking out for their interests. They simply cannot understand Obama because of their fears of black people. Now that one is in power they feel disconnected and afraid, yet they fail to see that they have created their own isolation. and they realize now that because they have been branded as a racist movement that the only way to gain momentum and support is to make white Americans feel like they have a right to feel racist hate against our President. If they can stir up racist sentiments in the general populace they will be able to connect with a larger demographic since the Tea Party is in fact full of bigotry masquerading a justified, constructive anger.

what the NAACP needs is a new

what the NAACP needs is a new face that can appeal to younger crowds without sounding too extreme or staunchy. It's the young folks that need the most reaching out too since they are the most vulnerable to the media as their identities are still being formed. If educators could find ways to make black history interesting and more relevant to youth today (or if black history was more widely taught in k-12 education in general) then i'm sure more would be interested in what the NAACP has to say and would care about revitalizing it.

ok, that's all for me, i've posted a lot here :)

I really wish these

I really wish these "tea-party" people had the same energy against big gov't when Bush and Cheney were in the white house! We'd be in a whole lot better situation without their failed policies and wars, instead they were calling the ones out protesting Bush "hippie wannabes". Now they're on the outside looking in and they don't like it. The tea party is nothing but the same old Klan, they just try to put their message in a more palatable wrapping this time around. If you genuinely cared about gov't spending, healthcare, jobs, etc, you would have been out in full force when Bush was in power, why now? Why now when somebody's in the white house trying to clean up Bush's big messes? Yeah, we know why. If Hillary or some white democrat was in the White house, there'd be no tea party klan rallies; they'd still be mad, but not to this extreme.

Coffy's picture

The Tea Bag Party are just

The Tea Bag Party are just “haters not debaters” or as others have dubbed them “screamers not dreamers”, with their failed attempts at stopping Healthcare reform, they say they respect the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and the Declaration of Independence but they do not mind passing laws, through weak Governors (no one voted for this crazy) who only cares about getting elected Governor, on the backs of undocumented workers, that will not pass Constitution muster.

Brewer signed into law;
1. S.B. 1070,
2. No permit conceal weapons law,
3. The famous Birthers law,
4. Banning Ethnic studies law,
5. Banning human-animal hybrid (aren’t most GOPers crossed with the Reptilian race?)
or are they just giving Laurence Gonzales, some great promotion material for his new book “Lucy”.

6. Could she be behind the Mural in Prescott, Arizona, ordered to be whiten,
7. On deck to pass, no citizenship to babies born to undocumented workers,

8. If she can read she should look up Arizona’s House Bill 2779 from two years ago (which was un-constitution and failed when legally challenged),
9. The boycotted Martin Luther King Day, what idiots don’t want another holiday? Yes, you guessed it Arizona.

Well Arizona, you can boycott new holidays and keep passing crazy laws and the rest of us will continue to challenged them in a court of law and continue to add cities to our Boycott of your state.

I real cannot believe anything that comes out of Brewer’s mouth, in an interview she first said her father had died in Germany fighting the Nazi in World War II (war ended 1945) but of course we find out the truth that father was never in Germany and died in California in 1955. But we are suppose to believe everything else she says, right! No one voted for you for Governor, yet you keep listening to the tiny brains of the crazies and signing into law everything that comes into their feeble minds, it only make you look dumb, stupid or racist, or maybe all three.

As for the Tea Bag Party, their phony patriotism is sickening; they are just racists going by another name. We all know you are just itching to put a sheet on their head? Let’s face it the Republicans had eight years to deal with health care, immigration, energy (remember Cheney’s secret meetings with oil companies where loosening regulation and oversight were sealed), climate change and financial oversight and governance and they failed. It appears that the Republican Party is only good at starting wars (two in eight years, with fat contracts to friends of Cheney/Bush) but not at winning wars as seen by the continuing line of body bags that keep coming home. The Republicans party will continue turned inward to their old fashion obstructionist party (and their Confederacy appreciation roots) because they continue to allow a small portions (but very loud portion) of their party of “birthers, baggers and blowhards” to rule their party. I will admit that this fringe is very good at playing “Follow the Leader” by listening to their dullard leaders, Beck, Hedgecock, Hannity, O’Reilly, Rush, Savage, Sarah Bailin, Orly Taitz, Victoria Jackson, Michele Bachmann and the rest of the Blowhards and acting as ill programmed robots (they have already acted against doctors that perform abortions).

The Birthers and the Tea Bag party crowd think they can scare, intimidate and force others to go along with them by comments like “This time we came unarmed”, let me tell you something not all ex-military join the fringe militia crazies who don’t pay taxes and run around with face paint in the parks playing commando, the majority are mature and understand that the world is more complicated and grey than the black and white that these simpleton make it out to be and that my friend is the point. The world is complicated and people like Hamilton, Lincoln, and Roosevelt believed that we should use government a little to increase social mobility, now it’s about dancing around the claim of government is the problem. The sainted Reagan passed the biggest tax increase in American history and as a result federal employment increased, but facts are lost when mired in mysticism and superstition. For a party that gave us Abraham Lincoln, it is tragic that the ranks are filled with too many empty suits and the crazy Birthers who have not learned that the way our courts work is that you get a competent lawyer, verifiable facts and present them to a judge, if the facts are real and not half baked internet lies, then, and only then, do you proceed to trial. The Birthers seem to be having a problem with their so called “Internet facts”. Let’s face it no one will take the Birthers seriously until they win a case, but until then, you will continue to appear dumb, crazy or racist, or maybe all three. I heard that Orly Taitz now wants to investigate the “Republican 2009 Summer of Love” list: Assemblyman, Michael D. Duvall (CA), Senator John Ensign (NV), Senator Paul Stanley (TN), Governor Mark Stanford (SC), Board of Ed Chair, and Kristin Maguire AKA Bridget Keeney (SC), she wants to re-establish a family values party, that is like saying that the Catholic Church cares about the welling being of children in their care, too late for that. Yee Haw!

How can this hatred be allowed. How can we present a united front if our citizens don't even respect our leader, and further more if we dont respect him or feel he is worth representing our country how can foriegn coutries respect him. Everyone is filled w/ expectations of immediate financial relief of financial burdens that were put on the taxpayers of this country years before he came into office, and sad to say that once we feel relief because of what our President is trying to do now he will probably be leaving office, and some other prez. will get the praise of saving our country. Hatred and racism are still very alive in our country today, and anyone is foolish to believe that our President is anything like those tyrant and menacing figures they compared him to, and bigger fool to believe that people who refer to blacks as nig@## arent trying to belittle that person. The right wing media circus will shine the light on ANYONE who has anything negative to say about Obama and his administartation because it makes good tv and sells ad space on the internet. destructive and deceitful.

we as a PEOPLE REALLY need to pay attention to the REAL politics, instead of waking up when we hear one of us is finally in charge

whocareswhatmynameis's picture

I doubt you understand what

I doubt you understand what "REAL politics" is otherwise you wouldn't have such an adverse reaction to the word socialism. The majority of Western European governments are varying forms of Socialism.

I agree that ordinary Americans need to educate themselves where politics is concerned so that the government cannot scare monger you with skewed facts.

Socialism =/= Communism/Fascism

SaiSai's picture

No! You need to wake up and

No! You need to wake up and pay attention. How do you explain members of the tea party calling Obama a N!88er and wishing that he gets lynched! How do you explain black congressman getting spat on and death threats just because they are black and they support the president. How do you explain people outside of the white house holding up signs saying "kill that monkey in office" huh? How do you explain the majority of the tea party being white American. If it was only about people disagreeing with his policies than there would be more people of all colors joining the "tea party". Obviously most (except for you) can see through the BS.

Its okay to disagree with his policies this is America that is our right! But when was the last time you've seen a president so disrespected in history? NEVER! The only difference between President Obama and the others is his skin color.

How can anyone condone comparing the President Obama to a man as vile and evil as Hitler. The only thing the president is trying to do is help the people of the United States. By passing the Healthcare Bill, Consumer protection against insurers, A wall street overhaul, putting billions of dollars into clean energy. Investing in children that have been "left behind", and finally ending this long winded wars tha Bush started. If this is what Hitler and Marx did than they are my heros!

How about you wake up from under the sheets and see whats really going on.

SimmonsRoyalty's picture

If these people knew what

If these people knew what socialism was they wouldn't be calling Obama a socialist. And if they were that concerned about the idea, then they would give specifics as to how he compared to Hitler and Marx (who were enemies by the way) instead of speaking in such broad generalizations. They look ignorant and ridiculous. The sign itself isn't racist, but what the NAACP is doing is telling the Tea Party leaders that if they dont call out the extremes in their "movement" then they are no different because staying silent causes one to assume they condone it.

Also, there was another billboard that was put up that depictate Obama as a Muslim with a wrap around his head...are we to assume thats not racist as well? While I agree that not everything is racist, there are situations that are and peopel making excuses for it might as well say "everyone get over it because thats just the way it is"...no, how about they stop being ignorant and people will stop complaining?

I was going to say the same

I was going to say the same thing. But I disagree on two points, Marx's ideas were not neccessarily decitful. That depends on where you stand on his argument...and I when I read their explanation, I can understand their concern. They are simply saying that impassioned tea partiers have disparaged marginalized groups, and the tea party as a whole should address this. I think the picture is misleading because I agree that the photo only illustrates a disagreement in ideology..however, the actual text suggest tolerance of bigotry.

Mon Cheri's picture

Do you even know what

Do you even know what socialism is? Like someone said below, people say the word socialism, but do not know what it actually mean. I swear sometimes as black people we are really lost, especially since some black folks swear the tea party is not racists. Wake up, and looks around and SEE what the Tea Party is talking about. Wake up and look around and SEE what the Tea Party message is, and their message has NOTHING to do with the government. Stop being so clueless, and learn what is going on in the world of politics.

Bella's picture

I don't think the tea party

I don't think the tea party movt is racist. I think some of the members are racist but the movement isn't.
the billboard is not racist. I've seen extreme propaganda used against George Bush as well.
People can dish it but can't take it. I feel black people abuse the race card thereby rendering it useless when it really needs to be pulled.

Anonymous's picture

Perhaps if some white people

Perhaps if some white people would stop giving black people a reason to use the race card they would stop. How about that? And the fact that the Tea Party (who are basically Republicans in drag) and their leaders allowed this nonsense to go on for so long without condeming it leads one to suggest they are ok with it. Not everyone in the Tea Party is racist...but a lot of them are sore losers and hypocrites that were no where to be found the previous decade protesting the deficit or talking about spending. Why? Because it was their party doing it. They are really upset because their party is completely out of power. They do a lot of talking with no solutions. How are you going to say you want the deficit cut (in a time where the country is in a recession no less) then turn around and say you want tax cuts? That makes no sense? Why are they protesting taxes that haven't been raised on a federal level? These people are full of it and im over the ignorance, as are a lot of people regardless of race or political ideology. Either come up with legit arguments and solutions to counter the Democrats and Obama's administration or STFU!

Yeah, the tea party is not racists they are just white people who hate minorities. And if you are a black person you are really delusional, go look at pictures from the KKK I mean Tea Party rallies and you will see signs that display hate for non white people. If the KKK I mean Tea Party really have issues with the government why not present their issues in a non hateful way, oh and it is funny that the tea party started in 2008. The same Tea Party it benefiting from Obama, I forgot they are not smart enough to realize that they are benefiting from the tax credits for the middle class.
