I am really worried about the state of our community and its future after reading some of the hateful comments on this board. From the time I came into this world, my life had already been affected by domestic violence. My grandmother lost her battle with cancer at the age of 44 when my mother was 19 years old, 6 years before I was born. My mother grew up watching my grandfather beat her whenever he was drunk and something set him off, even tried to beat her on her deathbed in the hospital. He cared so little about his family, that he let his six kids be separated in foster homes for two years when my grandmother was going through chemo. He outlived her so that he could continue to verbally and physically abuse his children. Growing up, I always thought that had my grandfather not beat the crap out of my grandmother whenever she did something that he felt deserved a beating, that perhaps she would have been able to fight the cancer that killed her. I mean, it's must have been hard to find something to live for if the person that vowed to love you and care for you beats you on an almost daily basis. As a black woman, to hear other black women excuse a man beating on a woman breaks my heart, because to me, it says that we don't support and protect each other. And to think that there is ever a justifiable reason to beat someone the way Rihanna was beaten? You might as well say the slave-owner were justified in beating slaves, perhaps the slaves were talking smack? Maybe the slave looked at the slave-owner the wrong way, so that slave deserved to get strung up. Domestic violence is not excusable, Chris Brown said himself there is no excuse for what he did. So why are people making excuses for him? Because it is easier to make up stories about a traumatic event because then a person does not have to confront to make it seem like it doesn't involve you. The only direct evidence we have as to what happened that night is the photo, showing her battered, and the cell phone records, showing she called her assistants, and the call from Chris to Rihanna’s assistant a few days later. That evidence points to her being beaten by him, nothing else. We also have circumstantial evidence: (1) the police report that recited her version of events, (2) him pleading guilty to assault, (3) his public apologies (coming from the horse’s mouth), and (4) the snippets of her interviews (again, coming from the horse’s mouth). ALL of this evidence points to a brutal assault on her. We have NO evidence, direct or circumstantial, that suggests she hit him first. No photos of him being bruised, no police report of his saying she hit him first (which, I’m sure, could have been “leaked” if he really wanted to), and no statements from EITHER of them that she hit him first. Thus, I don’t understand why people are going hard on the “she hit him first” theory. There is no evidence to support that, except vague statements from people on Chris’ payroll.
