Vogue Italia Goes All-Black

For the July issue of Italian Vogue, they have photographed only black models. In a reverse of the general pattern of fashion magazines, all the faces are black, and all the feature topics are related to black women in the arts and entertainment. This issue of Italian Vogue will be on European newsstands next Thursday and in the United States soon after. And you can read all about it here. Hotness. Here's what the photographer had to say about his inspiration for this issue:
"I thought, it’s ridiculous, this discrimination,” said Mr. Meisel, speaking by phone from his home in Los Angeles. “It’s so crazy to live in such a narrow, narrow place. Age, weight, sexuality, race — every kind of prejudice.” …Mr. Meisel has his own theories about why black models, save for the token few, have disappeared from runways. “Perhaps the designers, perhaps the magazine editors,” he said. “They are the powerful people. And the advertisers. I have asked my advertising clients so many times, ‘Can we use a black girl?’ They say no.” The concern is that consumers will resist the product, he said. “It all comes down to money."

{Click Thumbnail}Apparently there was a battle to see who would get the cover of the historic issue. And the winner is Liya Kebede. The pullout cover then goes to Naomi Campbell, Sessilee Lopez and Jourdan Dunn. Other models featured in the mag are Veronica Webb, Tyra Banks, and Toccara. Pure hotness. More pics from the issue when you read the rest...

TO RBG 4 Life who says: "I

TO RBG 4 Life who says: "I find it regretful that you cannot see the difference between what you call black women enhancing their beauty and white women enhancing theirs, given our history as Africans in this world and the fact that white women (and escpecially white men) are the one’s setting the standard of beauty that makes these things “necessary” to many African women. I am sorry that you don’t see how mentally, spiritually and sometimes physically (i.e. bleaching) those enhancements can be for black women." And to all other posters: please be conscientious about how you use the term, label, notion or whatever of the word AFRICAN; there is a very distinct divergence in the history of African Americans, black Americans and Americans of colour AND the Africans of present generations living in Africa or otherwise. In plenty of African communities, white people or Europeans or caucasians or whathaveyou DON'T set beauty standards!! So your American experience does not parallel the overall African experience. I mean, where I come from (Southern Africa-NOT South Africa though hehe) the notion or concept of beauty will differ depending on your economic standing, but will also be highly influenced by your ethnic/ tribal group. Also, what is/are "African features?" Africans DO NOT have homogenous features: you just have to see Malagasies to know what I mean!! Other than that, it is great to see women get political! Communication and understanding are always pathways to positive change.

The girl was asking if we going to buy the vogue issue. I said no and i explained my point. Then SHe came back at me to say that we should support this issue because it might give an incentive to other designers. And i told her that in MY OPINION (sinc ei have the right to have one), it is not going to change nothing because the problem is MARKETING. You target the people that buy your stuff. Now, IDK where you get all this latina stuff, my point was that we , minorities are in the same situation, latina, black, asian. The bottom line is money.

The bottom line is money. The model has to have the look to sell magazines. At least that is the thinking here in the US. It is a crazy state of affairs when there has to be a black issue to bring to light the racism that exists in the fashion industry. Well, I know one thing is for sure-Black is beautiful.

I'm not surprised by this. A few years ago I took a trip to Italy with my wife, who happens to be a very attractive 34 year old black woman, and the men over there couldn't take their eyes off of her. We also saw an older black woman in a store in Venice, Italy and one of the men who worked there was treating her like royalty. It was a great thing to see black women being appreciated like that...but don't try and steal this brother's chocolate queen. No siiiiir!

I don’t give a phuck who

I don’t give a phuck who vogue puts on or in their magazine. When it comes to black folks, it’s real shit going on in the world but mofos is crying cause white folks won’t publicly recognize our beauty! Folks gettin all excited like “oh, they like us, they really do. Italian men love black women!”. Who gives a f…coons. Like everything, it starts at home. We gotta recognize our own beauty first and stop trying to imitate that of others. These pages will be dripping with bone straight hair weave and airbrushing. And I love that they picked those with the most european features too. I know, we come in all shades and shapes and blah blah blah. Even the dark brown girls have “slim” features. Can’t wait 2 see how they airbrushed Tocarra. Not only that, but the ridiculousness of black folks spending millions on “designer” and “name brand” bullshit when we still haven’t achieved real cummunity wide wealth and power is beyond me. Everybody wanna be beyonce with some shiny ass, gaudy ass channel bag. These cats have proved that they don’t respect us as people and could really do without our representation but folks will be rushing to buy this magazine to prove that black sells…ha! We already know that…I Had to get that off my chest. Thanks and RBGs UP! - I agree with this comment wholeheartedly. Black will never be wholly accepted by mainstream culture cuz we don't accept ourselves because so many have torn us down that we don't know if we're coming or going.

I don't buy Vogue because I

I don't buy Vogue because I never see anyone on the cover who reflects me when I'm standing in the checkout line. I think this is a fabulous idea and can't wait to buy this issue. Hopefully this will inspire designers and others to change their opinion about the marketability of black women. Thankfully Michelle Obama is helping to put this myth to rest! Women everywhere are paying attention to what she wears. That dress she wore on The View the other day has become a hot seller. Designers are clamouring to get her to wear their clothes. The winds of change are in the air. And its ABOUT TIME!!

The picture after Liya is

The picture after Liya is Chanel Iman. Please correct this credit. The point of this post and this Italian Vogue issue is to stress the importance of these models being properly recognized for their work. Jourdan Dunn is the third from the left in the fold out cover, before Naomi Campbell. Jourdan and Chanel Iman are both beautiful in very different ways. Chanel is an American beauty, a cute blended mix of African American and Korean. Whereas Jourdan, possesses a British austerity and charm we don't see much here stateside. It's sad that both have been compared to one another when they look completely different. I never understood, since working in this industry, the need for one agent of one black model to slam on other black models as if "my black model is better than their black model!"...i guess it stems from tokenism and the herd mentality of fashion: I admit, I had to cancel Chanel Iman once because my client told me "Jourdan is the better black one." wtf? in this case, i thought Jourdan was also better than most of our predominantly white casting (the white brazilians were pretty good, though)...also, in this case Chanel Iman was a better model than most of the casting, but she got canceled (fired/laidoff) simply because she is black. In fashion, it isn't elusive, sneaky, pc, or polite: it has been blatantly very anti-black...and i have been fired from many a job because dare i say it? I let the Blacks inside the house! what would the neighbors think!?

KUDOS to Italian Vogue! This

KUDOS to Italian Vogue! This is the "main" reason the Germans hate the Italians. they are always the first to knock down the race barriers...i.e. art, fashion, etc. I won't get toooo excited over a come-up regarding a magazine shoot (we are f*cked in so many more important instances) but hey, every bit counts, right? Baby steps, they say. All of them look nice.
